House of Spirits Paragraph 2

Rosa's death causes Esteban to marry Clara without actually loving her. "I thought about how I had lost two years dreaming of Rosa, working for Rosa, writing to Rosa, wanting Rosa, and how in the end I wouldn't even have the consolation of being buried by her side. I thought about the years I still had left to live and decided that without her it wasn't worth it, "(pg.35) This quotation shows how Esteban was truely loved Rosa, and that he would never love anyone else but her. Esteban eventually marries Clara, even that he doesn't know that she does not actually love him. Clara sees that she will be married to Esteban by her clairvoyancy and that it is in her destiny, so she marries him for that, not by love. "He did not know that she had seen her own destiny, that she had summoned him the power of her thought, and that she had already made up her mind to marry without love." (pg.90) This quotation shows how Clara decides to marry Esteban for the sake of her destiny, and not for love. Because of this lack of love, Esteban has the desire for love and seeks it elsewhere.

English Paragraph 3

School and technology has had a big impact on the cultures in both books. School has been intergrated into the Nigerian cultures of both books. In TFA, the school was not welcome at all. People who went to the school were rejected and shunned by their society. Since the school was christian, the school did not teach them anything about their culture and society, but European point of view. In L&J, schooling was more accepted and not brought in or taught by christians. The school was teaching the people about questioning their culture, and their beliefs. The people were starteing to unaccept their old culture and becoming westernized, just like everything else. Also, Technology was not accepted in TFA. They were talking about the iron horse, and how they were afraid of it and how they tied it to a tree. Eurpoeans were bringing their technologies to Nigeria, but they didn't need any of it. They were doing fine before they arrived, so they didn't need any help. In L&J, they accepted technology and were facinated with it. Both authors had the same view on how the Europeans were changing their culture, but Achebe had a more negative view of it and Soyrinka had a more positive view.

well...there is a start on that
hopefully i am not going off on too many tangents!!

English paragraph 2

I know my intro and thesis statement need some revamping.. but i don't think i am going to have enough on diversity to write a whole thesis paper on, so that is why I did my thesis statement on changing the cultures, and the diversity would be one of my arguments....
anyways..

The new religion that the Europeans have brought had changed the Ibo culture dramatically. First of all, the Europeans came with their new religion and they were not accepted at all. They wanted land to build a church and a school. The Nigerian people gave them their land. Eventually, the christians started to convert Nigerians over to their religion. Those people were rejected by the Ibo people. Eventually, alot of Nigerians would be converted to christianity and their religion would be absorbed just like alot of other aspects of their culture. It wasn't just the religion that was changing people. They also brought along their governmental system over and were changing they way that people were being judged or punished. Some things may have been better for the Nigerians in our point of view after the Europeans came, but they were happy before they came, so why should they have been changed, or bothered.

Anyways...hopefully i can go along those lines for one of the arguments. I will of course eventually have some quotes in there!

English Paragraph 1

The colonalization of Nigeris has greatly changes the cultures in both "The lion and the jewel" andd "Things fall apart". When the Europeans came to Nigeria, they took over and changed their culture. They made churches and converted people so that a new religion was growing, and the old religion was diminishing. Also, Europeans changed they way that some of the people thought, they brought in schools, and brought technology. This may sound good and all, but it actually was ruining Nigeria. In my opinion, Nigeria would be just like the rest of us. Europeans were trying to "westernize" Nigeria, but then there wouldn't be any diversity. Why would anyone want to travel to different places, if we were all the same.
